Batches of mosquitos have tested positive for the dreaded West Nile Virus in multiple areas throughout the Midwest and Northeast United States.

In Massachusetts some of the batches also tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis. Municipal parks and beaches in certain areas will now be closing at sunset due to the positive test results. An official said that it is not an emergency, only a minor threat and that they are just being cautious.

Eastern equine encephalitis is a rare but serious disease with around a 50 percent fatality rate among humans.

Thirteen counties in Illinois have reported positive test results for the virus in both birds and mosquitos and there are two confirmed cases of human infection so far this season.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health also reported positive test results for West Nile Virus last week.

Senior citizens have the highest risk of serious illness from West Nile.

Health officials are advising that all standing water be drained around homes to avoid breeding sites for mosquitos and to wear protective clothing and use insect repellent while outdoors during evening hours.
